A Step-by-Step Guide to Disassembling Final Drive Motor Gearboxes - Case, New Holland, GEHL, Mustang

A Step-by-Step Guide to Disassembling Final Drive Motor Gearboxes - Case, New Holland, GEHL, Mustang

Disassembling a final drive motor gearbox can be a daunting task, especially for those new to handling heavy machinery components. However, with the right tools and techniques, it can be made simpler. This step-by-step guide aims to provide detailed knowledge on how to dismantle a final drive motor gearbox. Our example today focuses on the Bon Figoli final drive gearbox, a common component in machinery from manufacturers like Case, New Holland, GEHL, and Mustang. At CR Components, we are selling remanufactured Track Loader Parts $ Skid Steer Parts as well. Buy now !

Step 1: Remove the Snap Ring

Start by removing the snap ring that secures the components within the gearbox. This might require a bit of finesse as the snap ring is often placed over the oil plug, making it tricky to access. Using snap ring pliers, gently tap the ring from side to side to loosen it.

Step 2: Oil Plugs Removal

Next, proceed to remove the oil plugs. Leave one plug halfway in; this will aid in leveraging the end cover off without needing to excessively hammer it. The use of a flathead screwdriver under the halfway-removed plug can provide the necessary leverage to ease this step.

Step 3: Removing the End Cover and Seal

With the oil plugs and snap ring out, the next step is to remove the end cover and the seal beneath it, which can be either an O-ring or an X-ring. Carefully lift the cover to avoid damaging any internal components.

Step 4: Extract the Sun Shaft Gear

After removing the end cover, your next target is the sun shaft gear. This gear typically does not require the removal of any snap rings and should lift out easily along with its associated plate.

Step 5: Remove Additional Snap Rings

There are usually four snap rings securing the gears on the top of the gear posts. Remove these one at a time. This step may require some prying with specialized tools like a lady's foot pry bar to ensure the gears are not damaged in the process.

Step 6: Work on the Inner Gear Bearings

Once the top snap rings are removed, use the lady's foot pry bar to nudge the inner gear bearings up until they are flush with the gear posts. This provides the clearance needed to remove the gears entirely from the assembly.

Step 7: Address the Bon Figoli Nut

The removal of the Bon Figoli nut is a critical step. At CR, we use a drill press with a 13/32" drill bit, which fits perfectly into the pre-drilled holes of the nut. Ensure the drill bit is well-lubricated and long enough to reach through without damaging the gearbox housing.

Step 8: Drilling and Separating the Nut

Drill into the nut and continue until you feel the bit reach the harder material of the bearing race. Use a magnet to remove any metal shavings and measure the depth with calipers to ensure complete penetration through the nut.

Step 9: Remove the Nut

Once drilled through, use a punch or a similar tool to tap on the drilled holes and split the nut. A pair of Phillips head screwdrivers can then be used to spin the nut out. Caution is needed to avoid applying too much force, which could damage the threads.

Step 10: Clean and Inspect

After removing the nut and all internal components, inspect each part for wear or damage. Clean the components and the housing thoroughly to prepare for reassembly or replacement of parts.

Conclusion

Disassembling a final drive motor gearbox requires patience and precision. While the task may seem complex, following these detailed steps will help ensure a successful disassembly, readying your machinery for further maintenance or repair.
