How to Rebuild a Track Loader Final Drive Gearbox (Case, New Holland, John Deere)
If you're dealing with a worn-out or leaking final drive on your compact track loader, this step-by-step guide based on our teardown and reassembly video will walk you through how to rebuild the hydraulic drive motor and gearbox assembly. Whether you’re working on a Case, New Holland, or John Deere machine, the principles are largely the same.
Our experienced technician demonstrates how to properly install key components like bearings, planetary gears, face seals, and more—sharing helpful tips along the way so you can rebuild your final drive motor at home.
Applicable to Models
This tutorial applies to a wide range of machines from major brands:
- CASE: 420CT, 440CT, 445CT, 450CT
- New Holland: C185, C190, LT185B, LT190B
- John Deere: 319D, 323D, 329D, 333D, CT315, CT322, CT332
If you own or repair one of these models, this guide is a must-see.
Step-by-Step Rebuild Process
1. Installing Hub Bearings
The rebuild begins with pressing in the hub bearings. This is a critical step in any hydraulic drive motor repair. Use the proper driver tools to ensure the bearings are seated cleanly without damaging the races.
2. Installing Face Seals
Next comes the installation of the drive motor face seals, often referred to as duo cone seals. One of the most important face seal installation tips is to lubricate both sealing surfaces and use a plastic guide sleeve to avoid rolling the seal during insertion.
3. Combining Motor Housings
Once the internal components are seated, the two halves of the drive motor housing are brought together. Ensure all surfaces are clean to prevent contamination.
4. Installing the Second Hub Bearing & Spanner Nut
The second hub bearing is installed using a similar technique. After that, the assembly nut (also called a spanner nut) is threaded in and torqued to the manufacturer’s spec to hold all internals in place.
5. Installing the Drive Motor Planetary Gears
In this step, our technician demonstrates installing the drive motor planetary gears into the gearbox casing. If you’re new to this, remember that correct placement and gear meshing is essential to avoid binding. This is one of the most critical parts of any planetary gear motor installation.
6. Installing the Drive Motor End Cover O-Ring
Before the final sealing, the drive motor end cover O-ring is placed into its groove. This O-ring ensures an airtight seal and prevents fluid leaks during operation. If damaged or dry, always replace it before closing the motor.
7. Filling Gearbox Oil & Final Cover
The gearbox is filled with the correct grade of gear oil, which lubricates all internal gears and bearings. Afterward, the end cover is installed and bolted down evenly to finish the assembly.
